How to answer ‘Tell me about yourself’

A simple present–past–future structure for a confident opening answer.

4 min read

Give a professional overview

Start with what you do now and the experience most relevant to the vacancy. Then select one or two earlier achievements that explain how you developed your strengths.

Finish with why this opportunity is a logical next step. The answer should guide the interviewer towards your strongest evidence without becoming a complete life history.

Keep it natural

Prepare key points rather than a word-for-word script. Around one to two minutes is usually enough for an opening overview.

Remove personal information that is unrelated to the role. Enthusiasm is valuable when it is connected to the work, organisation or contribution you hope to make.
