How to understand salary ranges in job adverts

Salary varies by location, sector, responsibility, scarcity of skills and working pattern. Compare roles with similar scope rather than relying on the job title alone.

Consider pension contributions, leave, bonuses, training, travel costs, flexibility and contracted hours. A higher headline salary may not produce the best overall package.

Before an interview, identify a reasonable range using several sources and your current level of responsibility. When asked, state a range and explain that it depends on the complete role and package.

Do not invent a current salary or competing offer. A factual discussion about value, expectations and affordability is more sustainable than an aggressive opening position.
