Writing a cover letter that adds value

Use the cover letter to connect your evidence with the employer’s needs—not repeat your CV.

Answer three questions

A useful cover letter explains why this role, why this organisation and why you. Open with the position you are applying for and one strong reason you are suitable.

Use one or two short examples to show relevant achievement. Refer to the vacancy requirements directly, but do not copy its language word for word.

Keep it specific

Mention a genuine feature of the organisation, service or role that interests you. Avoid praise that could be sent to any employer.

Close by confirming your interest and availability. A concise letter with a clear purpose is more persuasive than a page of broad adjectives.

  • Address a named person when known
  • Use short paragraphs
  • Match the tone of the employer
  • Proofread the organisation name
